If you are considering retiring to the UK the city of Leicester could be a good choice. Leicester is a wonderful city to live and has something for everyone. Steeped in English history and tradition and boasting over 350 listed buildings, Leicester is located in the county of Leicestershire in the middle (The midlands) of England. Leicestershire offers some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK. Leicester is also served by fantastic transport links, and journeys times by train to London take just over an hour.

Living costs in Leicester

If you choose to retire to Leicester you can either buy or rent. A two bedroom apartment in the city center will cost between £80,000- £260,000. And a nice two bedroom house will cost you £150,000 upwards depending on quality and location. If you retire to Leicester and prefer to rent, a two bedroom apartment would cost any from £450 per month upwards and a two bedroom house around the £550 a month upwards, again depending on standard and location.

Where ever you choose to retire to in the UK and whether you purchase or rent a property you will have to pay council tax. Council tax help fund local services such as street lighting, rubbish collection, roads and local schools. The amount you pay will depend on the size of your property but you can expect to pay anywhere from £1,000-£3,000 per year. And if you own a TV you will also be expected to buy a TV license, this will cost you £145. 00 a year. On average gas and electric will set you back £80.00 a month and water £30.00. And if you shop around you could easily dine like a king on £80 a month per couple.

If you retire to Leicester you won’t be short of thing to see and do. Situated in the cultural quarter is the state of the art Curve Theatre which offers a world class theatre experience. Prices of theatre tickets vary depending on the show. Also in the cultural quarter is the Phoenix, which is Leicester’s independent cinema and art center complete with café bar. The Phoenix shows an eclectic mix of films from all over the world, as well as running small exhibitions and courses. Tickets at the Phoenix start from as little as £3.00 a show. The cultural quarter also has several very nice bars and restaurants. Leicester also has three other cinemas showing all the latest movies, tickets costing £9.00 or less depending on time and day.

If dining out is your thing you will not be disappointed if you retire to Leicester. Leicester has restaurants that offer dishes from all around the globe and that suit any budget. A pub lunch may cost you only £6.00 with a glass of wine or pint of beer, or a very nice 2 course meal with wine from £25.00 upwards.

Leicester is also a shopper’s paradise. The city has all the well-known high street shops but also boasts lots of exclusive boutiques. And in the heart of the city you will find Leicester’s iconic outdoor market which sells local produce including fruit, vegetable, flowers and other things too.

If and when you retire to the UK even if you don’t choose Leicester to live in, make sure you at least make time to visit this beautiful and vibrant city.
